Most Haunted
Spectres at Staircase House
On Friday 2 September 2005 under the cover of darkness the daring Most Haunted Investigators ventured into Stockport to examine the most sinister mysteries of Staircase House .
As the merchant’s house was built over 500 years ago the many stories of apparitions and ghostly figures caught the attention of Yvette Fielding, Derek Acorah and the 'Most Haunted' team.
Karl Beattie, Director/Producer of 'Most Haunted Live', said,
“Staircase House is a hidden jewel in Stockport’s crown. It has a lot more to offer than architecture and history - it’s very scary and some of the guests are see-through!”
Staircase House was broadcast live to the nation and played host to some spine chilling experiences. The cold store, kitchen, parlour and staircase proved to be the most active of all the rooms, rife with tapping, rapping and knocking noises as the investigation team called for the spirits to communicate with them. Thumping sounds from the floor responded to Yvette asking questions of the spirits, and a ghostly spectre, half lit, was seen moving around the staircase.
Yvette Fielding commented,
“Staircase House is a beautiful property, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and wish it could have been longer - even though it was haunted!”
Spiritual medium Derek Acorah uncovered a raft of family names including Robert Wild, a member of the Wild family who ran a cobblers at Staircase House in the late 1800’s; Thomas Shallcross, a member of the Shallcross family who owned the house from 1605 - 1730; and Robert Owten, former butler to the Shallcross family. The name Legh was also picked up by Derek as four members of the team (including Derek and Yvette) held a ouija board and sufficiently stirred the angry spirit to spell out the word DIE! Shortly afterwards while calling to the spirits, Derek was possessed by the ghost of Thomas Shallcross revealing the angry ranting of ghosts who were disturbed by the fire which emblazoned the house in 1995.
